Prelude to Mike’s Walk

About the walk!

I am planning on walking across the U.S. starting January 2022. I am starting from San Diego, California and ending in Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina. This will be coast to caost.

I will be using a cart and tent camping in campgrounds, parks, peoples yards…if they are kind enough to let me set up camp for a night. I hope to do 20 miles a day starting out, and picking up the pace as I go along!

The purpose of the walk is to bring attention to Mental Health issues, suicide awareness, and the stigma attached to them that many people have to face and deal with, but are reluctant to talk about.

Exercise is an important part of overall general health, both mentally and physically, and walking is a very good exercie that most people can do. It doesn’t have to be cross country or even across town for that matter, just get out, get some fresh air, stimulat the senses and free your mind.

Ther are som many people suffering from the wymptoms of Anxiety, Panic attacks, Suicidal thoughts and Depression on varying degrees, making it hard for some to cope with jobs, social activities and even life itself.

These are real issues and real illnesses that need our attention! And yes, I said illnesses!(Edited from Mike’s blog:footcruisingamerica.blogspot.com)

Specifications

U.S. Route 80 which was once part of the early auto trail known as the Dixie Overland Highway. It was originally the first all-weather cross-county route, from coast to coast for auto travelers. As an original U.S. Highway commissioned in 1926 it was know as the “Broadway of America” for a time and its history is second only to U.S. 66 in American highway folklore. Now the entire section west of Dallas, Texas has bee decommissioned in favor of various Interstate Highways and state highways. There have been several significant historical events that have occurred on or near U.S. 80. Bonnie and Clyde were ambushed approximately four miles south of U.S. 80 in Gibsland, Louisiana. Lee Harvey Oswald was captured at the Texas Theater on Jefferson Street in Oak Cliff, which at the time was a business spur of U.S. 80. The National Historic Trail Alabama runs 54 miles between Selma and Montgomery, Alabama you can read about that here:

Presently, the states of California, Arizona and Louisiana recognize former and current sections of U.S. 80 as a Historic Route.

Historical Significance:

Brother, Mike picked the Dixie Overland Highway for his walk across the U.S. due to the historical significance. You can read about it here:

I. Starting out in San Diego, California

Due to the time of year I am starting California is where I am choosing to start from. It normally is expected to take three to six months to walk. It is approximately 2535 miles give or take.

II. Ending at Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina

U.S. 80 goes to Tybee Island, Georgia, but Mike started at Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina so that is where I plan to end.
